West Pokot Seeks Public Views on the County Climate Change Bill
The West Pokot County residents engagement in drafting the Climate Change Bill reflects a commendable effort in addressing the impacts of climate change.
Led by the County Executive Committee Member for Water, Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change Lucky Litole, the 4-day public participation initiative across all the sub-counties aims to inform and involve communities in shaping this crucial legislation.
Representatives from all the 20 wards in the county are expected to air their views and expectations from the draft bill reinforcing the element of an all-inclusive approach as the county seeks to integrate technical expertise and public input to ensure a comprehensive final draft.
Highlighting the disparity in global greenhouse gas emissions, speakers noted Africa's minor contribution (1.2%) yet enduring severe effects of climate change. This scenario offers an opportunity for West Pokot County to enhance its knowledge especially on carbon markets
The amended bill also establishes a legal framework for carbon trading, aligning with the Climate Change Act of 2016, emphasising effective implementation of carbon markets.
The collective agreement among representatives from Wei-wei, Masol, Lomut, and Sekerr Wards underscores the shared responsibility to combat climate change.
The continuation of public participation exercises in areas like Alale, Kiwawa, Kasei, Sook, Batei, Tapach, Lelan, and other crucial regions indicates a thorough and inclusive approach toward enacting impactful climate change legislation in West Pokot County.
