West Pokot County Launches Mass Livestock Vaccination Campaign
The County Department of Agriculture, Irrigation, Livestock Development, and Fisheries, has officially launched a mass vaccination campaign to protect livestock from major infectious diseases. The exercise, led by CECM Wilfred Longronyang, targets the vaccination of cattle against Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia (CBPP), goats against Contagious Caprine Pleuropneumonia (CCPP), and sheep and goats against Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR).

The launch event, held at Kanyarkwat, marks the beginning of a countywide vaccination drive spanning 20 wards, including Kanyarkwat, Riwo, and Katikomor. Over the next month, the campaign aims to vaccinate approximately 300,000 cattle and 600,000 goats, ensuring better disease control and improved livestock productivity.

Speaking at the event, CECM Longronyang emphasized the critical role of vaccination in preventing the rapid spread of airborne livestock diseases, which pose a significant threat to pastoralist communities. He urged all farmers to present their livestock for vaccination to safeguard their animals' health and enhance economic resilience.
Additionally, the CECM relayed a message from H.E. Simon Kachapin, calling on all livestock owners to fully participate in the initiative. He reiterated the county government’s commitment to improving animal health services as a key pillar in enhancing food security and livelihoods in West Pokot.
The vaccination campaign, supported by veterinary officers and stakeholders, is a proactive step in safeguarding the county’s livestock sector, ensuring sustainable growth, and boosting agricultural productivity.
