Transforming Marich: A New Era for Agricultural Trade Begins
The County Government of West Pokot, in collaboration with USAID KUZA, officially launched the construction of the Marich Fresh Produce Market, a transformative project designed to boost agricultural trade in the region. This KSh 114 million initiative aims to provide farmers with modern infrastructure to access better markets and improve their livelihoods.
Deputy Governor Robert Komolle, speaking during the site handover ceremony, reaffirmed the county’s commitment to completing the project within the stipulated four-and-a-half-month timeframe. He urged local residents to actively support the project and cooperate with the contractor to ensure smooth implementation.
“This market will transform how our farmers do business, offering them better opportunities to succeed. We call on the community to collaborate with the implementation team to ensure the project is a success,” said Deputy Governor Komolle.
The Marich Fresh Produce Market is being funded under a co-financing model, with the County Government of West Pokot contributing 50% of the total cost, while USAID KUZA provides the remaining 50%. Once completed, the market will deliver significant economic benefits, including improved market access for local farmers and enhanced trade infrastructure to support the region's agricultural sector.
USAID KUZA Deputy Chief of Party, Venny Mayaka, emphasized the organization’s dedication to the project's success. “We are committed to ensuring this market stands the test of time. Our team of engineers and technical experts will provide regular oversight, spending 15 to 20 days on-site each month to ensure the highest quality standards,” she noted.
A multidisciplinary implementation team from USAID KUZA will oversee construction, provide technology support, and ensure adherence to best practices. Upon completion, the modern market facility will be handed over to the County Government, offering farmers and traders a platform for growth and sustainable economic opportunities.
The Marich Fresh Produce Market is a key milestone in the county’s efforts to promote agricultural trade and empower local farmers.
