Sensitization workshop for the county executive committee members on draft agricultural policies

Agriculture accounts for 84% of West Pokot County economy and with bills and policies in place, the sector will be well coordinated and sustainably grow, thereby positively impacting on the county's economy.

The County Executive Committee members were taken through a two day sensitization workshop on various agricultural policies and bills that will guide the county agricultural sector supported by GoK, County Government of West Pokot and Agriculture Sector Development Support Program (ASDSPII).


The bills and policies under County Government of West Pokot Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries include;

1) County Agriculture Sector Coordination Policy 2023 whose broad objective is to provide for an effective coordination of the stakeholders and players in the agricultural sector in the county.

2) The West Pokot County Livestock Sale Yards Bill, 2023 whose objective is to sustainably manage Livestock sale yards within the county

3) The West Pokot County Preservation of Soil and It's Fertility Bill, 2023 which provides for the conservation of the soil and its fertility and stimulate the development of agriculture in accordance with the accepted practices if good land management and husbandry.

4) The West Pokot County Agricultural Inputs Subsidy and Grants Bill, 2023 to establish efficient legal and institutional framework for development and regulation of inputs subsidy and grants to farmers for connected and incidental purposes

Various technical officers from the department under the guidance of County Executive Committee member for Agriculture irrigation livestock and fisheries, Wilfred Longuronyang took the County Executive Committee members through the policies and bills including Victor Namboka-ASDSPII county coordinator, Caroline Misiko-M&E KCSAP, West Pokot County, Dr. Anthony Wesonga- Director of Livestock and Peter Wamalwa who is the county deputy director of agriculture in charge of environment and land development.
