Governor Simon Kachapin Addresses Senate Education Committee on ECDE Teachers' Welfare in West Pokot

H.E. Governor Simon Kachapin appeared before the Senate Standing Committee on Education following a request from Sen. (Rev.) Julius Murgor, MP, regarding the welfare of Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teachers in West Pokot County.

Sen. Murgor sought clarification on several key issues concerning ECDE teachers, including:

1. The rationale behind transitioning ECDE teachers' contracts from permanent and pensionable terms to fixed-term contracts, and whether the process adhered to legal requirements.

2. A detailed salary structure for ECDE teachers in the county, along with an explanation of recent salary fluctuations and allegations of a 28% reduction in pay.

3. Initiatives by the County Government to improve the welfare of ECDE teachers across the region.

Governor Kachapin, accompanied by the CEC for Education Rebecca Kide, representatives from the West Pokot County Public Service Board (WCPSB), and the county government's legal team led by Robert Katina, provided detailed responses. He confirmed that the county has already begun implementing a new scheme of service aimed at enhancing the welfare and working conditions of ECDE teachers.
