Governor Kachapin Commissions 80-Stall Bendera Market to Boost Trade
More than 80 traders in Bendera are set to benefit from a newly commissioned market as Governor Simon Kachapin continues his push to improve trading spaces across the county.

The Bendera Market, located in Kapenguria Ward, had stalled for years before being revived under Kachapin’s administration. Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the governor emphasized the market’s role in supporting small-scale enterprises and enhancing local trade.

“This market is proof of our commitment to empowering traders by providing modern and well-equipped trading spaces. By improving markets across the county, we are laying the foundation for sustainable economic growth,” Kachapin said.
The governor also announced one year tax grace for the traders.
Elizabeth Loshang’ole, a resident of Bendera, expressed her gratitude for the completion of the long-awaited market, highlighting the challenges traders faced over the years.
“We can’t thank your administration enough for completing this project, which had stalled for 10 years. We have lost potential businesses and incomes over that period. But now, it’s time to turn the page for all of us,” she said.
The Bendera market includes 80 stalls and is equipped with a 10,000-liter water tank and on-site washrooms, ensuring better hygiene and convenience for traders and customers.

Bendera Market’s revival is part of a broader initiative to modernize trading hubs across West Pokot. Through the Economic Stimulus Package, the county is currently upgrading key markets such as Makutano, Sigor, Ortum, and Orolwo, aiming to create business-friendly environments that drive economic transformation.
CEC Claire Parklea (Trade & Investment) noted that her department worked around the clock to ensure that the market serves its purpose and ultimately boosts trade in the area.
The current efforts aim to modernize market infrastructure to cater to the growing urban population. In Sigor and Ortum, the focus is on enhancing agricultural produce markets to support farmers and traders.

Governor Kachapin reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring each sub-county benefits from essential market infrastructure that fosters entrepreneurship, creates job opportunities, and strengthens local economies.
With improved trading spaces, small-scale traders in West Pokot can look forward to better business opportunities, increased income, and a more vibrant local economy.
Governor Kachapin was joined by Deputy Governor Robert Komolle, MCAs, CECs Claire Parklea (Trade), Paul Woyakapel (Health), Rebecca Kide (Education), Lucky Litole (Tourism & Gender), Chief Officers Daniel Lopale (Trade), Reuben Lotumale (Public Works), Leonard Kamsait (Water) among other officials.
