Communications Authority Inspects Connectivity Projects in West Pokot, Pledges Further Collaboration with County Government

Deputy Governor Robert Komolle, representing Governor Simon Kachapin, welcomed a delegation from the Communications Authority of Kenya, led by Benjamin Rop, Director of Communications in the Universal Service Advisory Council, during a courtesy call to West Pokot County.

The visit focused on inspecting ongoing Universal Service Fund (USF) projects aimed at expanding connectivity in both served and underserved areas.

Attendees from the county government included County Secretary Jonathan Siwanyang, County Executive Committee member for Public Service Management and ICT Martin Lottee, Chief Officer PSM and ICT Musa Losiangole, Deputy Director of Peace Veronica Lomole, and Head of ICT Pius Kamtia. The Communications Authority team is assessing several key projects, including mobile network infrastructure, educational broadband connectivity, and the superhighway network, while also exploring potential partnerships with the county government.

The Communications Authority has successfully connected 56 institutions, including 12 schools, with broadband. Out of 16 sub-locations that have been linked, seven projects are ongoing, and 19 sub-locations are under survey for future connectivity. Additionally, fibre infrastructure has been installed in 24 government institutions in the county, with a survey underway to connect 56 more.

During the discussions, Deputy Governor Komolle acknowledged the significant challenges faced by the county, including insecurity and poor road infrastructure. He assured the Communications Authority team that the county is committed to working with them to address these issues and improve accessibility, particularly in underserved areas. He emphasized the county’s focus on upgrading key routes and enhancing road access to support ongoing projects.

Chief Officer PSM and ICT Musa Losiangole noted that exploring more affordable infrastructure options could be a viable solution, and urged the Communications Authority to engage with stakeholders for effective implementation. CEC Martin Lottee added that while some infrastructure is still under development, the county government is working tirelessly to ensure all residents benefit from improved connectivity, even in areas affected by insecurity.

County Secretary Jonathan Siwanyang commended the Communications Authority for following up on its projects and ensuring they align with the development needs of West Pokot residents. He emphasized the importance of collaboration to drive progress in the region.

The Communications Authority also made key requests during the meeting, including assistance with approvals, rates, and levies required for the successful implementation of their projects in the county.
