Chepareria Municipality Board Members Sensitized on Draft Sustainable Solid Waste Management Policy in FAO-Facilitated Meeting
Chepareria Municipality board members participated in a sensitization meeting, facilitated by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), to review the draft Chepareria Municipality Sustainable Solid Waste Management Policy.
The event, held at Horizon Hotel, focused on the policy’s potential to improve environmental conservation and public health through reduced landfill use, increased recycling, and minimized pollution, all aimed at safeguarding local ecosystems.
During the session, board members were guided through the draft policy, which outlines critical aspects such as permits, fees, fines, and other charges associated with solid waste management.
Speaking at the event, County Executive Committee Member for Lands, Housing, Physical Planning, and Urban Development, Esther Chelimo, emphasized the long-term benefits of sustainable waste management. She noted that the policy would not only reduce operational costs but also create new economic opportunities through green jobs and ensure compliance with national regulations.
Chief Officer Mathew Rionokol supported these views, adding that the policy plays a vital role in advancing climate action goals by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and prolonging the lifespan of waste management facilities.
The meeting also highlighted the importance of community involvement, with participants advocating for educational campaigns to promote responsible waste disposal and recycling. This, they stressed, would contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment for Chepareria Municipality, making the policy essential for sustainable urban development.
Also in attendance were Chepareria Municipal Manager Silas Plimo, his deputy Dorina Chepkopus among other officials from the County Department of Lands, Housing and Physical Planning and Urban Development.
