Red Cross Introduces Cash Transfer Programme
Red Cross has launched a pilot cash transfer program to benefit the underserved persons in the county.
During the launch which was presided over by Governor Prof. John Lonyangapuo at Kodich, Pokot North, the USAID-funded project will assist 1,750 households from Pokot North and 973 households from Pokot Central. These are regions which suffered crop failure early in the year due to prolonged drought.
Kenya Redcross Deputy Secretary General Annette Msabeni said that the programme is aimed at benefiting vulnerable families in order to safeguard them from the effects of drought and crop failure.
The effects of climate change and climate induced disasters are becoming increasingly significant worldwide, leading to increased health risks, mortality and morbidity rates, as well as food insecurity and malnutrition. The impacts of these disasters on health are manifold, whether direct or indirect.
Cash intervention continues to be commonly used as a modality to provide assistance after the occurrence of an emergency. The impact of these interventions has been significant in delivering support and alleviating suffering for those affected by disasters.
The team later on commissioned a vaccination exercise against COVID-19 and encouraged residents to go for the jab.
