Commissioning Of Livestock Market

Approximately 70% of Kenya’s livestock is produced by about 10 million pastoralists in the Arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs) which accounts for 12% of Kenya’s GDP.

Livestock plays a critical role in the livelihoods across a number of households in West Pokot County.

Speaking at Kishaunet during the ceremony, Governor Lonyangapuo said that his administration is keen to see its residents focus on bigger opportunities available that result from livestock rearing.

He added that the opening of livestock markets across the county is geared towards ensuring that the livestock sub-sector plays its rightful role of improving the livelihoods of the residents of the county who highly depend on it.

“Our livelihood is reliant on livestock - we sell these animals to get money to buy food and other family needs, but now we can’t,” Lonyangapuo said.
