The frontier counties development council (FCDC) is not an idea that was born yesterday. Under president Kibaki, a fully-fledged ministry of Northern Kenya was created to correct injustices meted on frontier counties in line with Agenda 4 of the 2008 National Accord.
It is from this foundation that the governors from the northern frontier counties have formed a bloc to tackle perennial challenges that have been a hindrance towards development.
During a three-day conference in Kapenguria which brought together Governors Capt. Ali Roba- Mandera, Mohamed Abdi- Wajir, Dr. Mohammed Abdi Kuti- Isiolo, Mahmud Mohamed Ali- Marsabit, Moses Lenolkulal- Samburu, Alex Tolgos- Elgeyo-Marakwet, Patrick Khaemba- Trans-Nzoia, Deputy governor Peter Emuria- Turkana and leaders from neighboring Uganda, the leaders sought to solidify their unity while seeking solutions to challenges facing the counties, which resulted from marginalization.
FCDC chairman Capt. Ali Roba said that the member counties had resolved to be the new economic bloc in Kenya. He emphasized on the need for the leaders to take charge of changing the narrative of pastoralist counties.

“We share a common history of marginalization with respect to other parts of Kenya. We are cognizant of the fact that these challenges that we face as frontier counties cannot end on a single day. It is our responsibility to deliver our people into delivery.” Maintained Capt. Roba.
His sentiments were shared by the other governors present who pointed out that it was time that northern frontier counties prioritized their issues and raise them as one voice.
“We have a lot of natural resources in our counties. We need to tap into these resources to our benefit,” said Amb. Mohamed Abdi- Governor, Wajir County.
Governor Prof. John Lonyangapuo who hosted the conference said that the frontier counties produce 90% of the meat consumed in Kenya, hence the need to ensure that the region is disease-free.
“We began a vaccination exercise across our county in order to ensure that we produced the best meat in Kenya. This is something we can now do as a bloc,” said Governor Prof. Lonyangapuo.
FCDC CEO Mohammed Gulleid expressed the need for the counties to shift focus on avenues to exploit already existing resources.
FCDC focus areas include education, roads, food security, health, peace and agriculture.
The event saw Samburu County being formally admitted to the council.
