The Governor this morning received trophies earned at the just concluded National Cross Country Championships Cum Trials for Africa Cross Country Championships held on 10th February, 2018 at Uhuru Gardens, Nairobi.

 
 


The team that represented the region was the overall winner and position 2 at the Junior Men Race respectively at the Athletics Kenya National Cross Country.
Out of the 65 athletes that will represent the country on 8th-15th Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast Australia, 14 athletes are from the North Rift Region. 4 athletes are from West Pokot County, they are Joseph Poghisio Losiangar, Lilian Kasait, Edward Zakayo and Celvin Cheptoek. Also in the team was Michael Kibet a Chewoyet High School student who represented Kenya in the African Cross Country and came out number one in the Junior races.

 
 


Speaking while receiving and handing over the trophies to the Department of Sports, the Governor Prof. Lonyangapuo emphasized the issue of nurturing the young talents.
“Kenya depends on North Rift Region for athletics and so all youths should be motivated to bring forth their talents which will reward them. This is an economic issue; these youths will earn from athletics. As a county we should be able to define our sports base where our sports men and women will train to better their talents and strategize on our county’s sports victory.” He said.

 
 


The team asked the Governor to be the patron of the AK North Rift Region where he accepted. “The sitting governor of the county that is the headquarters automatically becomes the patron". 
Also present at the event was CEC, Tourism, Culture, Sports and Youth Affairs- MS Emily Chepoghisio, CO Sports- Wilson Ngoroko, Wilson Musto- AK North Rift Chairman, Clement Poghisio- AK Chairman, West Pokot, Joseph Loriwo- Vice Secretary, AK North Rift and the Team Manager Mr. joseph Mareng.
