Athletics Kenya in partnership with West Pokot County hosted the Athletics Kenya North Rift regional cross country athletics qualifiers at Kishaunet showground. The North Rift Athletics comprised of teams from 5 counties i.e. West Pokot, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Turkana, Transnzoia and Samburu.
The events included:
1. Junior women-6km
2. Junior men-8km
3. Senior women-10km
4. Senior men-10km
5. Universal relay
This event was done to select the best that will represent the region in the national championships.
Gracing the occasion was the hosting County Governor, Prof. Lonyangapuo, West Pokot County Assembly Speaker Madam Mukenyang, Wilson Msto-AK Chairperson, North Rift, CEC in charge of the participating Department, Ms Chepoisho, CEC-Education and Vocational Training, Mrs Apakoreng, CO-Sports, Mr Ngoroko, Joseph Loriwo-AK Secretary North Rift and Clement Poghisio- AK Chairperson West Pokot.
The Governor applauded the efforts the Sports department have put in nurturing the young talents in the country. “This is what we have been looking for. Where our people are engaged in competitive yet reproductive activities.” he said
Speaking after flagging off the universal relays where the West Pokot County team clinched the first position, he urged more young people to unveil themselves and engage in more of sporting activities to better themselves and grow the economy.
A team of 28 men and women are tasked to represent North Rift Region on 10th February,2018 at Uhuru Park for the Athletics Kenya National Championship.
