Nasukuta export slaughterhouse has finally been handed over to the County Government from the National Government in an event that took place at the abattoir graced by H.E Governor Simon Kachapin, The Principal Secretary State Department for Livestock and Fisheries Dr. Andrew Tuimur, the area Member of Parliament Hon. David Pkosing and officials from National and County Governments.

Speaking at the event governor Kachapin commended the National Government and The Ministry of Agriculture for initiating such a major project in West Pokot County. “The National Government has spent over Ksh.120 million in the construction of this facility and we need an additional Ksh.215million to complete it, I have managed to speak to the European Union and they have agreed to give us Ksh.100 million” he added. Kachapin also promised that his Government will work tirelessly to ensure that the facility comes to completion in the soonest time possible. “We have also secured funds to construct a bridge at the Iyon river and we will also ensure that this area has plenty of water that will benefit the locals” Kachapin said.

The Principal Secretary Dr. Andrew Tuimur stated that the main objective of the project was to add value to the local livestock sector by providing meat processing infrastructure at export level standards leading to access to international markets. “This would inject extra income to the local economy translating to improved livelihoods through employment creation with overall positive economic impact”, he stated. It is anticipated that the local livestock keeping population will be the direct beneficiaries through improved income and indirectly a positive impact will be felt by the general local economy according to Dr. Tuimur. “The State Department for livestock in the National Government would like to hand over the slaughter facility to the Department for Livestock in the County Government of West Pokot County Government as is basis. The West Pokot County Government should complete the remaining works to ensure the facility is fully operational. This should be followed by the design and implementation of a viable facility management structure that will ensure effective and efficient running of the activities of the facility. My Ministry will continue to liaise with the County Government in the capacity building of the staff charged with the responsibility of assuring food safety as outlined in the Constitution “He concluded.
