More than 500 households are expected to benefit from Kaminia irrigation scheme in Batei ward following the handing over of the 300m project to the contractor. The project which has been funded by Africa Development Bank and being implemented by The Drought Resilience & Sustainable Livelihoods(DRSLP), is already underway.

Speaking at the water intake point in Sebit, the governor Prof John Lonyangapuo said that the project will benefit the locals as most of them will absorbed in the project implementation. He added that the county government will partner with the donor agency to increase the number of acreage under irrigation, which will in result boost the county’s food security. He however called on the national government to improve the state of the Kitale-Lodwar highway to enable farmers to transport their produce to the market.

The project which has commenced had been met with resistance from the locals close to the intake point who pointed out that they had little to benefit from it. It took the intervention of the governor for the project to take off after stalling for years.
