The County Government of West Pokot has opened a new chapter in farming by distributing over 320,000 coffee seedlings to farmers to enable them engage in cash crop production.
The event was presided over by H.E Governor John Lonyangapuo and CEC for Pastoral Economy, Agriculture and Irrigation, Mr. Geoffrey Lipale. Over 1,000 farmers drawn from Kapenguria, Mnagei, Siyoi, Chepareria and Lelan wards were supplied with free seedlings which were acquired by the county government at a cost of Ksh. 15M.
It is estimated that, in the next 3 years upon maturity of the coffee plants, farmers will be able to reap a profit of 1B annually. This will greatly change the living standards in the county. The main aim of the project is to ensure food sustainability and strengthening economic development of West Pokot residents. The County Government has also earmarked to distribute seedlings for cotton, pyrethrum, and sisal among other cash crops
