First Lady Dr. Mary Lonyangapuo is set to launch a mentorship program geared towards empowering youth in West Pokot County.
During a meeting with various representatives from youth groups among them PUSA and Youth Bunge, the first lady said that there is need to empower youths in order to enable them to be self-reliant. The program dubbed as ‘Youth mentorship’- first of its kind- will see youths receive trainings and mentorships in various aspects of life. “It’s very unfortunate that as a country, we have left out our youths. That is why most of our youths today are involved in alcohol abuse and other vices. Our youths need direction. They need to be mentored so that they can become resourceful individuals tomorrow,” said Dr. Lonyangapuo. The first lady observed that negative values have largely to do with leaders who have not exhibited the spirit of selflessness and sharing amongst the youth. She further said that the programme will cultivate a desire to work hard and aspire to be better. The mentorship programme scheduled for 22nd and 23rd of June, will see two youths drawn from each ward benefit from the programme. She however said that few selected individuals will undergo a training process (training of trainers) before commencement of the mentorship programme.
