West Pokot residents living near Turkwel Dam are set for a major boost in business following the issuance of boats by The Governor H.E. Prof. John Lonyang’apuo on Saturday.
Governor Prof. Lonyangapuo who was flanked by other leaders said that the boats are expected to substantially promote economic activities in the area.
“In order to improve livelihoods of people living around Turkwel Dam, the county government has acquired four motor boats and 2 million fingerlings.” He said.
He said that the boats will also aid in mobility of inspectorate of fisheries, act as an ambulance in emergencies cases and also as a mode of transport; connecting the people of Endough and Kasei Wards.
The Governor moreover promised to build an abolition block at Riting Centre as well as an office for the Beach Management Unit (BMU).Senator Poghisio lauded the work being done by the Governor around the County. “As the Oversight person, I fully support what The Governor is doing in West Pokot County. He has ensured that the needs of the locals are made. I promise to work hard at the Senate to ensure that more money is allocated to this County.’ He said.
CEC Agriculture Mr. Geoffrey Lipale asked the locals to ensure that fishing is put on hold as soon as the fingerlings are released to the dam.
“Let us allow the fish to grow before we start fishing. We should also ensure that the nets we use are of the recommended size. The fisheries department will be conducting random inspection to ensure that laws are obeyed.” He said
The Governor was accompanied by visiting senators from the Senate Committee on County Public Accounts and Investment Hon. Moses Kajwang (Homa Bay), Hon. Kimani Wamatangi (Kiambu), area Senator Hon. Samuel Poghisio among other county officials.
