Governor Prof John Lonyangapuo this morning, has met representatives from MEA Fertilizer who are in the county to carry out soil analysis and give out a report by the end of September.
MEA fertilizer-Premier facility in East and Central Africa region accredited for fertilizer testing, will be in the county to determine soil needs so as to be able to provide farmers with fertilizer that has the right nutrients.
Governor Prof Lonyangapuo said the timing couldn’t be any better, pointing out that the county has suffered major losses in the past years as farmers used fertilizers that were available, without determining what was right for their soil types.
“In the past, wrong farm inputs have been used which has resulted in low yields. We hope MEA will provide us with the right fertilizer as from next year,” he said.
The governor further added that the county will provide the necessary support during the soil testing process and that it will give out a directive once the analysis results are out.
Jennifer Wainaina-Advisory Service Manager, MEA said that it is important for farmers to determine whether the fertilizer they buy is suitable for their soil, and whether the soil is suitable for growth. “Soil needs to be conditioned for better results. That is why we are in this county to get samples for soil analysis.”
Ms. Wainaina gave an assurance that they will give a result of the soil analysis by the end of September so as to prepare the farmers for the planting season. She was accompanied by Martin Koinange-Biofix Manager, MEA fertilizer.
MCAs and farmers from the various sub-counties were present during the meeting as plans are already underway on how the soil testing process will be carried out.
