HE Governor Prof John Lonyangapuo has suspended 23 ongoing construction projects. This comes a day after he received a damning audit report released by the National Construction Authority (NCA).
The technical team from NCA audited the selected 23 projects but none of them met the required standards of construction. Costs of most of the projects are highly inflated, some with work halfway done with poor workmanship yet total payments have already been done.
In a 200-page report unveiled by the county boss, he revealed what the report has termed as ‘numerous financial scandals’ that has led to huge loss of county money.
Furthermore, there was total disregard to procurement laws and lack of professionalism which saw very many 'briefcase' contractors awarded lucrative tenders that they had no capacity to handle.
This has seen West Pokot county lose hundreds of millions of shillings in underhand deals.
Projects mostly hit by irregularities include Agricultural Training College, Kopoch Tourist Hotel, Makutano Stadium among others.
Meanwhile, the governor has called on the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to conduct further probe on the cited projects and bring to book criminals who have been conniving to steal public funds.
He reiterated that his government will not condone theft of public funds.
"My government will not tolerate any forms of corruption. All those involved in the embezzlement of public funds must be brought to book", the Governor said while addressing the media this morning.
