HE Governor Prof John Krop Lonyang’apuo has been elected as the chairperson of 29 counties under Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL) caucus at the Council of Governors.

Governor Lonyangapuo termed it an honour and said he will use the platform to voice the needs of ASAL counties and ensure they are prioritized in the development agenda.
I strive to represent the interests of the 29 ASAL counties to ensure their priority needs are acted upon for sustainable development”, said Governor Lonyangapuo.

The ASAL committee deals with matters relating to the development of these areas by offering a platform for consultation on key issues such as contingency planning for drought and other associated risks. The mandate encompasses sharing of best practices, review of policy and legal proposals on issues of food security and drought management in ASALs.

The committee offers opportunities and platform for interventions in key areas such as direct investments in water to improve production and livelihoods. It also identifies existing gaps and opportunities for strengthening the capacity of counties to prepare for and respond to the impacts of weather-related shocks, with a particular focus on chronically vulnerable counties.
