A two-day training held at Kalya Hotel in Kapenguria to sensitize county technical officers on Sustainable development goals (SDGs) tracking and Voluntary Local Review process has come to an end with a call to develop priority actions to realize the SDGs.
The county Monitoring and Evaluation department in partnership with The Council of Governors (CoG) trained West Pokot County technical officers on sensitization on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) tracking and voluntary local review process. The two-day training held at Hotel Kalya in Makutano town funded by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the CoG, was led by Isaac Ritakou- County Head of Monitoring and Evaluation who is also the County SDGs champion, Ken Oluoch- Head of SDGs at CoG Secretariat and Michael Mwangi from The State department of Planning.

The training highlighted on mainstreaming of SDGs in action plans and County Integrated Development Plan (CIDP) to position the county to better implement the SDGs Agenda 2063. The training further aimed to support the county government and partners to implement and monitor the SDGs and to influence policy-making with a view to creating an enabling environment for actions at county and national level.
CECM for Finance and Planning Ms. Ruth Kisabit called on all county departments to develop strategic goals pegged on the SDGs in order to achieve a sustainable and progressive county. She further said that the SDGs have been the key drivers to reduce poverty and unemployment amongst the publics amongst through job creation, promotion of innovation and gender inclusivity.
Ken Oluoch who is the Head of SDGs at CoG Secretariat, emphasized on the need to develop a roadmap on voluntary local review process, terming it key to realizing the global goals. A key recommendation for maximizing VLCs benefits, he said, is to strengthen stakeholder engagement in the VLR process, and to enable the engagement to be thorough and self-organized.
“Voluntary local review will not only help county share on progresses made, but also engage communities through localization. This will encourage accountability and transparency in our endeavors to realize progressive societies,” said Oluoch.
The county head of Monitoring & Evaluation Isaac Ritakou, noted that the county government of West Pokot has made significant efforts to reach various goals of the SDGs with a priority in Education, Economy and Equity, as well as policy, planning, budgeting and monitoring and evaluation.
The SDG alias Global Goals were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that by 2030 all people enjoy peace and prosperity. However, as the 2019 SDGs Summit clearly demonstrated, many countries are not progressing fast enough, and hence the UN Secretary-General António Guterres inaugurated the ‘Decade of Action’ in January 2020. The Decade is built on three levels of action—global action, local action, and people action—to accelerate progress on the SDGs.

Voluntary Local Reviews (VLRs) could be an important vehicle to accelerate ‘local action’.
