The First Lady Dr. Mary Lonyangapuo on Thursday joined hundreds of girls from Lomut and Masol ward for an anti-FGM workshop which was held at Chesta Girls Primary School. The two-day workshop was organized by a Community based Organization called Ripot, which is at the forefront in the fight against FGM and early marriages.
Speaking during the workshop, Dr. Lonyang’apuo urged the girls to focus on their education by avoiding FGM which ultimately leads to early marriages.
“You are as important as the boy-child in the society so value yourself. Do not accept to be swayed easily by those that have no focus in life. Do not allow people define your future.” She said.
Catherine Mukenyang- Speaker, county assembly emphasized that it was time that West Pokot overcame the retrogressive culture of FGM. She said that FGM has been a stumbling block to many girls towards the achievement of their aspirations.
Francis Kitelauyan-CEC Finance & planning reiterated the speaker’s sentiments, pointing out it was time that girls realized that FGM is a meaningless practice in today’s world.
Ripot CBO usually holds workshops during the April, August and December holidays each year to teach and empower young girls on Christian values, importance of education and guide them to abandon retrogressive cultures such as FGM and early marriages.
The First Lady was also accompanied by the area MCA Hon. Jacob Toung’ole, Nominated MCA Hon. Nancy Chombir and Director-Office of The First Lady Mr. Isaac Molo.
