CAK SEEKS PARTNERSHIP WITH WEST POKOT TO EFFECT SPEEDY COMPLETION OF ITS UNIVERSAL SERVICE FUND PROJECTS

The Communications Authority of Kenya now appeals for closer cooperation with West Pokot County Government in the implementation of connectivity projects that is funded by its Universal Service Fund (USF)

During a consultative meeting with West Pokot Public Service Management and ICT department at the CAK headquarters Nairobi, the Authority expressed its interest in faster completion of the remaining phase 1 projects to pave way for the commencement of the second phase of the numerous projects being undertaken.

In the first phase, CAK through USF connected 7 public secondary schools in West Pokot, namely: St. Elizabeth Girls-Morpus, St. Theresa’s Girls-Tartar, Kapenguria Boys, St. Cecilia Chepareria, St. Comboni Amakuriat, Nasokol Girls and Holy Cross Boys-Kacheliba.

Other Public Secondary Schools also have an opportunity to be connected with internet, but the overriding requirement is they must have a computer lab fitted with computers, and must have computer studies as an examinable subject in KCSE.

Out of 14 projects obligated to Safaricom and Telkom Kenya to erect network masts in West Pokot, 7 have been completed, one is progress, while 6 are yet to be started. Safaricom and Telkom have until 2023 to complete the first phase projects but with cooperation with County Government of West Pokot. CAK endeavors to complete the projects sooner.

The incomplete projects include Kiwawa which is ongoing, Chelopoi, Chepkopegh,Kamketo,Kauriong, Orolwo and Sostin.

24 new masts mainly in Pokot North and Riwo have been lined up for construction in the second phase, which will ensure that the county is fully covered by mobile network. PSM and ICT Chief Officer Timothy Lomulen who led the West Pokot delegation invited the CAK to the county for further deliberations on how to expedite the ongoing projects, and create deeper cooperation between the county government and the CAK in the implementation of the phase 2 projects.

The West Pokot delegation to the CAK comprised of Chief Officer PSM and ICT Timothy Lomulen, Deputy Director ICT Alphas Kakuko, Chief Public Communications Officer Obadiah Kendagor and Communication and ICT officers, Irine Misiko, Emmanuel Lotam and John Lopuriang.
