West pokot county may be the first one in the country to be recognized by the International Association of Athletics Federation(IAAF) to create an enabling environment for the youths in the county to nurture and develop their talents.
Speaking after paying the county government a courtesy call, The Deputy Dicrector of communications at the IAAF Anna Legnani, who was accompanied by Amb. Tegla Loroupe of The Tegla Loroupe Foundation, expressed the need for partnership and merging of activities between the county government and the federation.

Legnani maintained that there is a lot of potential in the county for the development of the best athletes like Loroupe whom she termed as a ‘legend,’ especially the reformed warriors by offering them professional training and kits.
She applauded Loroupe for her immense contribution towards athletes in the region and her efforts to bring about peace within the county and her neighboring communities through her peace races.
On her part, Loroupe expressed her gratitude towards the federation and maintained that there is need to have better and healthier sporting activities within the county. She reiterated that she would ensure that West Pokot county gets the much needed support that would trickle down to the athletes even in the most remote areas.


Currently, The Tegla Loroupe Foundation is offering training activities to various schools in the county.
The Chief Officer in the Ministry of Tourism, Sports and Culture Moses Kales who received the visitors, expressed his delight in having the officials from the IAAF, terming it ‘a huge privilege,’for the county.
While highlighting the various projects and activities under the ministry, Kales said that the county is receptive to work with IAAF towards a more successful athletic culture within the county. “ West Pokot County is a hub of athletes, as it has been the case in the recent Kampala World Cross country where athletes from the county showcased a spectacular performance,” said Kales of the race where Irine Chemtai won a gold medal and Lillian Kassait emerged with a silver.
IAAF officials are currently in the county with the aim of forming partnerships to support athletes in the region and especially West Pokot.
